Eks Kaubamaja: Mustamдe 12. Outside the city center. Average selection; bad habit of cranking up dance music over the intercom.

Kristiine Keskus: (C-2) Endla 45; at the intersection of Endla and Tulika. An Italian-owned mall near the city center. It’s Western-feeling, breezy, spacious and has good lighting. Well-thought-out parking. www.kristiine.ee

Maksimarket: Vesse 3/5, tel. 613-7700, off Peterburi road. A somewhat cheaper option. There’s also another Maksimarket in Laagri, at Pдrnu mnt. 558a.
Melon: (C-3) Estonia pst. 1. A shopping mall for clothing and footwear.
Merekeskus: (B-3) Mere pst. 10, tel. 644-1188. A wide market-like selection of clothing items. No perishables, but there is a cafй on the second floor and outdoor seating during summer months. Open till 19:00.
Pro Kapital Business Center: (B-4) Narva mnt. 18. Owned by an Italian real estate developer.
Rocca-al-Mare Shopping Center: Paldiski mnt. 102, across the zoo. Estonia’s largest mall, and a favorite of many.
Rotermanni Keskus: (I-4) Mere pst. 4, next to the old city. A three story shopping complex with a market-hall layout. Good prices. A grocery store on the first floor.
SadaMarket: Sadama 6/8, tel. 661-4550. Next to terminals A, B, and C. This mall is new, and some areas are still empty. There is a security baggage check on the first floor. A good place to pick up any last minute souvenirs before hitting the boat.
Selver: in Jдrve, at Pдrnu mnt 238, tel. 667-3800 there’s a large shopping center. There’re also smaller Selver stores in Mustamдe, at Kadaka tee 56a, tel 667-3400; in Tondi at Tammsaare tee 62, in Lasnamдe at Punane 46, and in Pirita at Rummu tee 2. www.selver.ee
Stockmann: (C-4) Liivalaia 53, tel. 633-9500. A subsidiary of the Finnish department store, Tallinn’s Stockmann has a good selection of goods and an excellent grocery store. Their customer service is tops. Prices tend to be slightly higher than in most shopping centers. Good parking; a nice cafeteria on the top floor. www.stockmann.ee
Sikupilli Prisma: (D-5) Tartu mnt. 87, tel. 680-9500. The latest of growing numbers of giant, American-sized shopping malls. Good prices.
Viru Keskus: Viru vдljak 4, tel. 610-1400. Open:09-21. A brand new, top-of-the-line shopping mall in the heart of the city. It’s wonderful!

Handicrafts/Specialty Shops
Some craftsmen sell their wares along the street, like on Mььrivahe in the old city. Prices are cheaper than in stores, though you may have to shake the dust off your purchases. Estonian artisans excel in leather goods, ceramics, wool, jewelry and wrought iron. Woven snowflake-design sweaters are also classics. Look for colorful national costumes.

Unless you enjoy getting screamed at by bad-tempered customs officers, you won't want to take antiques out of the country without a license: that's called smuggling. You may need permission to take out Estonian objects older than 1945 and anything else older than 1850 (see CUSTOMS).

Clothes
There are plenty of clothing and shoe stores downtown. But selection can seem somewhat limited once you start looking for specific styles and sizes.
A few stores feature local designers, such as the Bastion store at Viru 12, (I-3) which has women’s clothing. Another local designer store is the excellent Ivo Nikkolo at Suur-Karja 14, (I-2)—women’s and men’s clothing. Liivia Leshkin’s women’s fashion and hand-painted silk is available at Pьhavaimu 3, (H-2), at the Draakoni Saba boutique; Kairi Vilderson’s women’s clothing in WW Passaaю at Aia 3/Vana-Viru 10, (I-3). Local manufacturer Klementi’s store is (C-2) at Kristiine shopping mall, Endla 45, tel. 665-0372. Top quality Estonian furs are sold at the Armiin shop at Suur-Karja 3 (I-2). Lingerie at Linette, (I-2) Mььrivahe 17, tel. 627-8940. Many of the above-mentioned designers now also have stores at the Viru Keskus.
Leading Estonian clothes manufacturer Baltika features practical yet stylish designs. Their Monton shop’s at Viru 22, (I-3)— the old city.
There are also some big international names with outlets in central Tallinn: Calvin Klein is at Viru Center, (I-4); JOOP! is at Pдrnu mnt 27, (C-3); MaxMara at Harju 6, (I-2); Nina Ricci Boutique at Vдike Karja 10, (I-2); Hugo Boss at Pдrnu mnt.10, (C-3); Italian knitwear at Wool & Cotton at Viru 10 (I-3).
